Farm stands, maple sugarhouses, wood-fired kitchens, and fine dining — all within easy reach.

The countryside around Newfane is some of the most rewarding hiking terrain in Southern Vermont. Whether you're after a gentle riverside stroll, a waterfall destination, a panoramic summit, or a quiet woodland loop, there's a trail to match your pace. The four routes below are our top picks — ranging from easy family walks to half-day adventures.
Distance: 6 mi round trip
Difficulty: Moderate
Drive: ~25 min
Highlight: 125-ft waterfall
One of Vermont's most spectacular hikes, the trail to Hamilton Falls follows the flat, scenic West River Rail Trail for two miles before climbing Switch Road Trail to one of the tallest waterfalls in the state. The first stretch is easy and suitable for all ages; the final mile gains elevation through forested terrain before opening up to the dramatic falls. Start from Jamaica State Park (small day use fee applies). Swimming at the falls is strongly discouraged due to strong currents and slippery rocks — but the view from the base is more than reward enough.
Distance: 1.2 mi loop
Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
Drive:~20 min
Highlight: 360° ridge views
A short but satisfying hike through maple, birch, and hemlock forest to a cleared 1,647-foot summit with sweeping panoramic views west toward Mts. Snow, Stratton, and Bromley, and east to Mt. Monadnock. The conserved lands are managed by the Putney Mountain Association and offer an extensive network of additional trails for those who want to explore further. Every autumn, the summit hosts a renowned Hawk Watch, where thousands of migrating raptors ride the ridgeline thermals — a magical sight in October.
Distance: Up to 36 mi
Difficulty: Easy
Drive: Access from Newfane
Highlight: River & valley scenery
A rail trail for all seasons, the West River Trail follows the former bed of the West River Railroad along the valley floor, passing through Brattleboro, Dummerston, Newfane, Townshend, Jamaica, and beyond. The level, well-maintained surface makes it ideal for walkers, joggers, cyclists, and equestrians of any fitness level. Access the trail directly from Newfane for a walk along the river without even getting in the car. In fall, the foliage along the river corridor is nothing short of stunning.
Distance: Up to 2 mi
Difficulty: Easy
Drive: ~20 min
Highlight: Historic vistas
Tucked just south of Brattleboro in the Connecticut River Valley, Fort Dummer State Park covers 217 acres of forested hills and offers three easy, well-maintained trails. The Sunrise Trail is a one-mile loop with lovely woodland scenery and a scenic overlook above the site of Vermont's first permanent European settlement — the original fort, now submerged beneath the Connecticut River since the construction of Vernon Dam in 1908. A peaceful, historically rich walk that pairs well with a trip into Brattleboro.
Wear sturdy footwear — Vermont trails can be uneven and muddy after rain. Bring water, a light layer, and a trail map or downloaded AllTrails route.
