Welcome To Otherland Hotel

Our Story

The origin of this special place goes back to 1969 when The Riverbend Motel opened on a quiet stretch of Vermont highway. For decades it offered travelers exactly what a roadside motel should - a clean room, a bed, a pause on the way to somewhere else.

What no one passing on the road could see was what lay behind it: a wide-spanning meadow, a river, and the southern Green Mountains rising in the distance. Forty acres of Vermont, quiet and unhurried, belonging to whoever happened to stop.

We stopped. And then we started building something.

Otherland is the complete reimagination of that property - every room, every space, every detail reconsidered from the ground up. We kept the bones. We rebuilt everything else.

What We Built, And Why

The goal was not a resort. Not a spa destination. Not a place that competes for your attention with programming and amenities you didn't ask for.

The goal was a basecamp.

Somewhere beautiful and considered to return to each evening after a day in Vermont - when the trail is done, the mountain skied, the river walked beside. A warm room with a great view. A private sauna unlike anything else in the region. A fire going in the lounge. And a way of running things designed to stay entirely out of your way.

We believe a small number of extraordinary things is worth far more than a long list of ordinary ones. The saunas are extraordinary. The river access is extraordinary. The meadow at dusk, with the mountains behind it and the fire pit glowing at the far edge of the lawn - that is extraordinary. Everything else is in service of that.

what we believe

Rest is not a reward for finishing everything. It is something you need, regularly, and it works better in the right place. Otherland was built to be that place.

Nature does most of the work. The mountains, the meadow, the river, the quality of light in southern Vermont at different hours and different seasons - these are not backdrops. They are the whole reason. The hotel lives inside that landscape as quietly as it can.

A few extraordinary things beat a long list of average ones. Two saunas worth making the trip for on their own. A stretch of river most guests find on the first afternoon and return to every day after that. A window nook that sounds small and turns out to be the thing guests remember most. We've tried to make every choice at Otherland feel like that.

Design should disappear. A well-designed space makes you feel at ease without being able to say exactly why. We've thought carefully about every room and every corner of this property - not to show off, but to make your time here feel effortless and natural.

The people you are with are the whole point. The long conversation that happens when no one is checking their phone. The evening that stretches past when you meant to turn in. The morning when no one is in any hurry to leave. Otherland is designed around those moments. But Otherland is a small place, with shared spaces and a fire that draws people in - and some of the best conversations happen with the strangers who turn out not to be. Come here with the people who matter. Stay open to the rest.
