Frequently Asked Questions

ABOUT OTHERLAND
WHAT IS OTHerland HOTEL?

Otherland is a boutique hotel in Southern Vermont - a fully reimagined property, originally built in 1969, set against the southern Green Mountains. The building has been completely renovated; behind it lies a wide meadow, the West River, and forty acres of Vermont land available to guests. There are 19 guest rooms, a private five-bedroom house, two architecturally distinctive private saunas, a common lounge with fireplace, an outdoor fire pit, a river with quiet nooks along the bank, and an activity lawn.

wHAT KIND OF PLACE IS OTHERLAND

A boutique hotel designed around nature, calm, and thoughtful design. There's no front desk or restaurant or spa. What we have instead is a small set of things done exceptionally well. Our guests tend to use Otherland as a basecamp: they go out into Vermont during the day and come back each evening to a warm room, a private sauna, and the meadow at dusk.

What was here before?

The property was originally built in 1969 as the Riverbend Motel. It later became known as the Lodge at West River. We completed a full renovation in 2026 - redesigning the rooms, common spaces, and grounds from the ground up.

What time of year is Otherland open?

Year-round. Summer by the river and on the trails. Autumn through one of the finest foliage regions in New England. Winter with Mt. Snow and Stratton thirty minutes away and the saunas waiting when you return. Spring when the valley quietly wakes again. Each season has its own reason to come.

ROOMS & THE PROPERTY
What are the rooms like?

Warm, considered, and unhurried in feel. Natural tones, low platform beds with premium linens, pendant lighting, clean lines. Each room has a large window with views of the meadow and mountains, and a cushioned reading nook built into the sill. Beautiful bathroom with premium toiletries, comfortable beds, and lots of little surprises to enhance your stay.

What room types are available?

King, Double Full, ADA-accessible King, and The Otherland House - a private five-bedroom home available for full-group bookings.

What is The Otherland House?

A private five-bedroom attached home within the property - with its own living space, kitchenette, and exclusive access to the outdoor amenities for the duration of your stay. Ideal for families, friend groups, or anyone who wants all of Otherland to themselves. It is located behind the main hotel building and shares a wall with the main building.

Is there parking?

Yes - complimentary on-site parking for all guests.

Are pets welcome?

Yes - well-behaved dogs are welcome at Otherland. There is a $50 pet fee per stay, with a maximum of two dogs per room. All pets must remain leashed while on the property, and owners are fully responsible for them throughout their stay.

What are check-in and check-out times?

Check-in: 4:00pm. Check-out: 11:00am. Early check-in is available for a small fee.

THE SAUNAS
Tell me about the saunas.

We have two, and they're both worth talking about.

The Mirror Sauna (by OOD House) is clad in reflective mirror panels that take on the meadow and sky around it - from a distance it nearly disappears into the landscape. Inside: warm, private, with a wide window onto the Vermont countryside. The A-Frame Sauna (by Lushna) is a cedar-clad peak, intimate and beautifully made - the smell of wood, the sound of nothing, the Vermont sky above.

Both are reserved exclusively for Otherland guests, in private time slots. We recommend booking right after you reserve your room.

How do I book a sauna slot?

After you make your room reservation, you’ll receive a welcome email with the link that will allow you to book the private time slot. Each slot guarantees private time for your group.

Are the saunas open year-round?

Yes. Both saunas run year-round.

THE RIVER & GROUNDS
What is the river access like?

The West River runs along the edge of the property, hidden behind the tree line. There are several quiet nooks and small beach areas along the bank - private to Otherland guests - where you can sit, read, wade, or simply be near moving water. A short walk from the back lawn. Most guests find it the first afternoon and return to it every day.

How much land is there to explore?

Forty acres - activity lawn, fire pit, meadow, woodland, and river frontage - all accessible to guests throughout their stay.
